    To my fallen

To my fallen comrades at the North East, a young boy now clenches his fists at the Harakat al – Shabaab al-Mujahideen. A lovely story, the problem is that the author hasn’t read the work, so he resorts to speculating with flair, but without any evidence. Leon Allatius, in Latin Leo Allatius, wrote a treatise that was never published, in which he defended the veneration of the holy foreskin; neither the title nor any other commentary alludes to Saturn and its rings… but never let reality get in the way of a good story.

    1. Hello Gustavo, thanks for reading my essay. You’re right, and I do say in this essay that no one has read the original treatise, so whoever writes about it must speculate. The Saturn story has however been repeated for decades. I’ve since traced it back as far as I can, and the earliest version is a satirical paragraph in the Freethinker of 3 July 1887, ending in a Latin pun; that summer Foote and Wheeler’s Crimes of Christianity repeated it as fact, citing only the title. The rings, it seems to me now, were a joke that later hardened into a relic. The one first-hand record of the treatise, a 1668 list of Allatius’s unpublished works, gives that title and nothing more. The title doesn’t show he defended the veneration either. If you have a source for what it argues, please let me know.
